This article explores how small unmanned aircraft systems (SUAS) are transforming battlefield intelligence and reconnaissance at the brigade level, using a fictional vignette set in Ukraine to illustrate challenges and solutions. It describes the limitations of traditional methods in the face of electronic warfare and complex terrain and argues that integrating SUAS through two frameworks—the Sector Collection Approach and the Ready Reserve Concept—can dramatically enhance situational awareness, agility, and decision making. The article emphasizes the need to shift collection management from simple asset allocation to proactive, effects-driven planning, highlighting that robust training, doctrinal adaptation, and seamless integration of SUAS into operational planning are essential for maintaining a decisive edge in modern warfare.
